A gentle guide — the Miora way
How to Care for Your Pearl Jewellery Like a Pro
Pearls are formed slowly, layer by layer — beautiful, but naturally delicate. A little care goes a long way.
Pearls are unusual: unlike most gemstones, they don’t come from heat or pressure. They’re grown in calm water, which is why they respond best to calm, simple care. Yes — you can wear them every day. Just follow a few easy habits.
1) Pearls are last on, first off
The golden rule (covers ~70% of pearl care). Pearls have an organic nacre surface that can be dulled by chemicals in perfume, hairspray, face/body creams, sunscreen and makeup.
How to do it: Get ready as normal (skincare → makeup → hair → perfume), then put pearls on last. At home, take pearls off first — then remove makeup or top up fragrance.
Tip: Apply perfume/hairspray before dressing, then wait 5–10 minutes before putting pearls on.
2) Avoid chemicals (they’re sensitive souls)
Pearls are calcium carbonate — sensitive to acids, alcohol and harsh cleaners.
Avoid: perfume, hairspray, hand sanitiser, household cleaners, chlorine, bleach, vinegar/lemon. Even sweat is slightly acidic, so wiping after wear helps.
Why it matters: chemicals slowly erode nacre, cause dullness, and weaken silk strings. Keep pearls away from “spray zones”.
3) Wipe them after wear
After wearing, gently wipe with a soft, lint-free cloth to remove oils/sweat. This prevents dullness and string deterioration.
- Use a clean, soft cloth
- Wipe each pearl gently (no scrubbing)
- No chemicals or jewellery cleaners
Pro tip: Keep a small cloth in your jewellery box — you’ll use it more often.
4) Store them properly
Don’t let pearls: rub against metal pieces, sit in very dry air, or hang long-term (strands can stretch).
Best storage: a soft pouch, fabric-lined box, or a separate compartment. Store necklaces/bracelets flat to protect the silk thread. Normal home humidity is fine.
Never use airtight plastic bags — pearls can dry out.
5) Wear them often (seriously)
Skin contact helps pearls stay hydrated and glossy. Don’t save them for “best” — wear them to work, brunch, the school run. Pearls are for life, not just occasions.
6) Keep them away from water
Avoid wearing pearls in the shower, pool, bath, hot tub, or at the beach. Water can weaken the thread, affect lustre, and introduce chlorine/salt. Take them off before spa days and swims.
7) Restring necklaces every 2–3 years
For frequently worn strands, restring every 2–3 years (more often for daily wear). Look for knots between each pearl — they prevent rubbing and minimise loss if a break happens. Earrings/rings/pendants don’t need restringing.

Why simple care matters
Pearls form in living water, so they respond to the world around them. With time they warm and develop gentle personality — much like the people who wear them. Treat them kindly and they’ll stay luminous for decades, gathering your stories as they go.
